If you are having trouble checking members in using initials, it is likely that your check-in/out settings may have been misconfigured. Please visit our help article on how to configure those settings here, and look for the sections on collecting and requiring initials. If you require initials, please ensure both "Collect" and "Require" are checked off and then be sure to Update Member Records and to sync your sheet to make sure the changes go into effect.
